If I Were A Republican Strategist, I Would Be Pulling My Hair Out About Now

I have worked successfully as a political strategist before and I must say, the Republicans are looking at blowing the game winning layup. No sitting president has ever won a reelection with an unemployment rate over 7.2 percent. My guess is that our unemployment rate could be closing in on 10% by election time. Be honest here, most folks know deep down that this economy isn’t going anywhere. Normally, a Republican candidate should be able to trounce Obama with the current economy. However, there is one small problem. The Republicans have a weak selection of candidates. Even surveys amongst registered Republicans have shown that party voters are not happy with their choices.

Therefore, the Republicans are slated to blow an easy win because they have nobody. Furthermore, and I know I will get some hate email on this one but I am sorry, even if you like one of the Republican candidates, none of them can likely take Obama.

Another problem is the growing rift within the Republican Party between Tea Party Republicans and traditional Republicans. The Republicans have always had one huge advantage with their ability to vote in unison. Newt Gingrich could have his boys vote down the line every time he needed it. The Democrats, having a more diverse constituency, have never had that unity in modern times. For example, Obama couldn’t get his Democrats to agree on anything in the health care bill, even though he was riding on super popularity at the time.

Now the Republicans cannot seem to unite within their own party. This will make pitching a candidate damn near impossible because they will have to please both the Tea Party and the traditional Republicans. Combine this with the fact that they have no candidates with any mojo and they are doomed.
