Here Is Why The Tea Party Just Handed Obama The 2012 Election
I know many viewers on this site are distributed across all sides of the isle, but the point of this article is to show you how not to make the most costly mistake in politics. If you don’t believe me, look at what the most well known conservative television and radio personalities are saying. Ann Coulter admitted, “The Republican will be blamed for this and it will hand Obama the election. John Gibson, who has the biggest conservative audience in the 1-3 p.m. radio time slot, is currently telling Tea Party members that they are acting like, “spoiled school children.” Sean Hannity, has even said that the Tea Party needs to negotiate.
Political negotiations are often like a high stakes game of poker. You have to know when to bluff, but you also have to know when to fold. When I was working as a political strategist, I would often have to tell people, “Do not get too emotionally involved in this negotiation because you will either corner yourself or miss the trap the other side is laying out for you.”
The tea party has failed to recognize that although sticking to principal is a respectable thing, being blamed for the implosion of the United States of America will make them hated, even amongst most Republicans. Since they were born out of the Republican Party, they will cause the entire Republican Party to go down the tubes. The Republicans look even guiltier in the matter because the media has latched onto the idea that it is the schism amongst Tea Party and traditional Republicans that has this bill so jammed up.
Lets look at the real cost of the debt ceiling not being raised. Any show that tells you it is not a big deal, or some sort of a bluff, is lying to you. Even as a private sector employee, you paycheck may soon dry up, and your retirement investments will vaporize.
First, we know all federal employees will obviously be screwed very quickly. This means all of the military, veterans receiving benefits, government funded scientist, and the list goes on. The rapid increase in interest rates will drive many private sector companies to lay people off in attempts to salvage profits. All loans including house and automobile loans will go up as well.
Next, almost everyone in the country has a retirement account, like a 401k or some equivalent. This money is invested in the stock market. If the US economy implodes and people loose almost all of their retirement savings, there will be hell to pay for whoever takes the blame. At this point it appears that the Republicans are slotted to be the whipping boy on this.
Therefore, even if you are a hardcore Tea Party member, your elected representatives just walked right into a classic trap and now Obama only needs to point at Republicans when things get really bad. If this were not true, the major right wing shows would not be criticizing their beloved tea party darlings. However, the strategists that work for these shows know exactly what I do; “When it comes to elections, when all is said in done, money talks louder than anything else. If you are perceived as the one who ruined someone financially, you’re done.”
